Consistency Is The Key
When it comes to training your puppy, it is crucial that you are consistent with your puppy. This means that you not only need to make sure that you are having regular training sessions with them, but that you are consistent with the way that you train them. For example, if the first time you say the command "sit" you also use your finger to make a sitting motion, it is very important that you do this each time. Switching up commands can confuse your puppy, and it may take them longer to learn a command. Also be consistent with your tone when giving a command, so they recognize it easier.
Reward Generously At First
If there is anything out there that will get your puppy excited about training, it is rewards. This could be a snack, a toy, a belly scratch, or a combination of all of these things. Your puppy will be very motivated to listen to you during your training sessions if they know a reward is coming. Because of this, it is very important that you reward generously when you first start training your puppy. Give them a reward each time that they do the command correctly so they know that they are doing it correctly and to encourage them to do it again. Once they really understand the command, you can cut back on the rewards you give them.
Let Them Know Who Is In Charge
Your puppy needs to know that you are in charge during their training sessions, or in other words, that you are the "alpha." Creating this relationship from the beginning of training will make things much easier because they will recognize that you are the leader of their pack and they need to listen to you. Now this doesn't mean that you need to be mean to your puppy at all, it simply means you need to use a firm and commanding voice when training and let them know it is time for training and not play.
