As a parent, you do what you can to prepare for just about anything that your kids can do to themselves. One injury that many parents aren't quite prepared for and do not handle well are eye injuries. Something as safe as running through the backyard can result in a stick hitting the eye. First Aid Kit
Your first aid kit should include an eye rinse kit. This kit comes with a small container with a cup on the end that you put over the eye. When the bottle is squeezed, the solution goes into the eye and washes out the debris that shouldn't be there.
You should also always have clean gauze and tape to cover injuries and protect them from any other debris or bacteria. Eye patches can also be stored in your first aid kit. These can be used to cover the eye without putting any pressure on it while you go to seek medical treatment.
Handling the Situation
How you handle the situation will depend on the type of injury that has been sustained, but no matter how minor the injury may seem, the first thing to do is to call for medical help. You will likely be directed to an emergency room for just about any eye injury, but always call to be sure that it's safe to transport the injured party or if they need to be transported by ambulance.
You see, eye injuries aren't always easy to see—the pressure behind the eye can build up after the smallest injury—it can happen quickly, or it can take several hours for the swelling to show. If the swelling happens quickly and you hit the wrong pothole or cause further trauma to the eye, permanent damage could be sustained.
If there's a foreign object in the eye—leave it there! Never pull anything out of the eye—let the doctors do it. If you pull out an object, it could cause excessive bleeding or exasperate the damage that the eye has sustained.
